Hospice Chaplain
Hospice chaplains work with the other members of the interdisciplinary team to counsel patients who desire spiritual care as they come to terms with the dying process. Hospice cares for the whole person, and part of holistic care is the patient’s spiritual well-being. Your job is not to preach to patients or push any particular religion or beliefs on a patient or their family. Your role is to have conversations with patients about their own spiritual thoughts and feelings to help cultivate patients’ spiritual health and help them feel as comfortable as possible. Your typical job responsibilities include: • Regularly meeting with patients and documenting interactions. • Ensuring that a patient has ongoing access to family and friends to keep them company. • Taking part in a patient’s ritual or spiritual practice, such as prayer or meditation. • Addressing any questions the patient may have about spirituality. • Helping patients through the process of coming to terms with their terminal illness. • Encouraging patient to hold onto their beliefs, even through feelings of doubt, anger, or fear. • Having meaningful conversations with patients about how their lives have value. • Conduct initial and ongoing comprehensive spiritual assessments and develop, implement and facilitate an individualized plan of care.
